Distraction Burglary

Over 10% of burglaries now happen with the occupants still in the house. This is a worrying trend that needs greater awareness.

Some of the ways criminals get in:

  • Push past the occupant when they open the door
  • Pretend to be from a water, gas or electric company or local council
  • Ask for a glass of water, to wash their hands
  • Claim to have lost their pet

They may be young (even children) or old, male or female and sometimes work in teams. They often target the elderly.

For products that prevent this type of burlary see our bogus caller section.

Remember

LOCK

Keep your doors and windows locked, even when you are at home

STOP

Are you expecting anyone, do they have an appointment? Make sure the back door is locked as some thieves sneak in the back while you open the door

CHAIN

Put the door bar or chain on before you open the door and use a door viewer or entry system to identify your caller

CHECK

Check their identity carefully. Ask for an ID card. Before letting them in, check their identity using the phone number from the phone book or a relevant bill, not the one on the card.

If in doubt do keep them out, particularly if you're on your own. Ask them to make an appointment or come back later when someone is around.

Genuine callers won't mind. If you are suspicious, report the incident to the police. You may stop someone else being burgled.
