Businesses are more at risk of crime than residential homes. If you don’t think it applies to your business, take a look at the headline results from the British Chamber’s 2004 survey.
  • 64% of all businesses surveyed experienced at least one crime
  • 31% of businesses were burgled, often by their own staff
  • 19% experienced an attempted break-in
  • The average cost per business was estimated at £8000
Protect your Cash

  • Have cameras that look at your till. This also deters staff from stealing.

  • Mark equipment and display signs explaining this to thieves

  • Keep as little cash as possible on the premises

  • Remove money from the premises overnight, and leave the till open and empty

  • Display prominent signs saying: “No money left on premises” or “time delays are in operation.

  • Bank safely. Count and prepare cash out of sight in a locked room.

  • Vary your route and time when you pay money in or collect cash from the bank

  • Don’t play the hero if attacked

  • Work out your emergency response to a major incident such as armed robbery. Make sure your staff know what to do.

Protect your Stock
  • Train employees in how to reduce opportunities for shoplifting and how to apprehend shoplifters

  • Keep store neat and orderly. Use mirrors to eliminate ‘blind spots’.

  • Keep merchandise away from store exits to prevent grab-and-run situations.

  • Keep displays full and orderly, so missing items are easily spotted.

  • Keep expensive merchandise in locked cases. Limit the number of items employees remove at anyone time.

  • Design exits so all persons must pass store employees or security staff. Consider the use of an electronic article surveillance system.

  • Think about installing CCTV. Make sure that it covers your store room as well as areas accessible to customers.

  • Watch dressing rooms and rest rooms at all times and limit number of items taken into dressing rooms.

Protect your Premises
  • Get advice from the local police

  • Securely lock all entrances and exits when nobody is on the premises. Do not leave keys lying around.

  • Lock valuables in a secure safe

  • Think about strengthening doors and windows

  • Install a burglar alarm

  • Consider having CCTV

  • Think about grilles or shutters on doors and windows

  • Keep windows free from displays and posters so staff can see anyone hanging about and who’s entering the premises.

  • Keep valuables away from windows to prevent ‘smash and grab’ attacks

  • Install good external lighting and locking gates where necessary. Think about where thieves might hide around your premises

  • Quickly repair damage to your premises.

Stop Fraud
  • Control who has access to equipment, documents and computers to prevent any unauthorised use.

  • Train your staff in your security systems and make your disciplinary policies clear.

  • Divide duties (where possible) between staff so any irregularities will be spotted and introduce appropriate supervisory and monitoring controls.

  • Random spot checks are effective at preventing fraud

  • Shred sensitive documents
